Beginning in the 1780s, large hoops with dangling pearls because a popular style that persisted through the ages.  

These large hoop earrings (see last photo for an example of them being worn) are gold plated and nickel free.

A large teardrop shell Pearl dangle hangs off of them.  Shell pearls are made of mother-of-pearl so they have all the shine and weight of real pearls without the cost.
